Perhaps I'm a bit ahead of my times but there are steamers that one can use to desalinize water. There are two pots one inside of another and a large pot top that covers both. The water is heated, the water is separated from the salt, as steam, which collects at the top of the pot and drips down the sides and collects as fresh water in the outer pot, which can then be filtered and used for cooking. It takes a lot of heat, etc, but it's possible and often used in the arctic for fresh water. Riah has one, and he uses it to make his food, burning some of his own stuff to make the heat. Why must you attack the cooking so. Too amused by Riah's such bad luck.

To Spammich: The thing with Ruy is that the world is divided into two main groups. The Captain, whom he obeys like a little, needy puppy, and the rest of the world, which are, objectively speaking, potencial target practice.
But Ruy's cute, sort of, and he has the strangest thought process, because as insane as he appears, I don't really think he -is- trully off his rocket.

"Perhaps I'm a bit ahead of my times but there are steamers that one can use to desalinize water. " Steamers of the sort that you're describing are probably a little early.. the rp is set roughly late 18th century, so the late 1700s. The sort of desalinization you're talking about would be adventing a little bit later, probably around the (very early) Industrial Revolution. However, similar and slower methods did exist, consisting of evaporating salt water being caught and funneled by canvas or oilskin into buckets. However, even then salinization occurs, and fresh water, even when boiled, can go stale extremely quickly. Ever wondered why pirates drank so much rum? Its because the water was LITERALLY undrinkable.
Even boiling might not kill all the pathogens, especially if Riah was adding foodstuffs from the stores. Incidentally, I did a bit of research into pirate diets, and while its true that this cite uses CARIBBEAN piracy, and we're off the coast of Portugal, its never the less a basic guideline: "The pirates primarily ate hard tack (long-lasting biscuits); although for longer voyages limes would be provided as a source of vitamin c. If they were lucky, the pirates would have a few hens on board the ship, which would provide both fresh eggs and meat. The pirates found a seemingly unlimited supply of meat with the turtles that thrived in the Caribbean. As well as being delicious, these turtles were easy prey for the pirates."
As such, Dahlia's asking about who feed someone what is actually entirely logical. Riah's mentioned his cooking often, and its entirely possible that Riah might have inadvertently poisoned Saigo; either through salinated water mixing up with the fresh water stores, improperly desalinated fresh water... or through something as simple as giving Saigo fat-rich food after months of hardtack. She's just going through the empirical method of medicine--eliminate the most obvious. In this case, dehydration had already set in [sluggish responses] coupled with electrolyte loss AND blood loss... Riah's feeding him even mildly salinated water could dehydrate him to the point of hallucinations. Its not that he's a bad cook, its that he might just have inadvertently salinated him up TOO much. Hell, even if he used fresh-caught turtle meat and blood as the broth [which is common AND delicious, if somewhat salty], he could have dehydrated Saigo. Its a lose lose. Not a personal attack, though.

Why don't you make another character? And don't you have a pirate character? Hikari or something?

Yeah Hitari...I kinda stopped liking her though. And besides, everyone else is off doing their own thing and she's just >_> Oh I dunno
I thought it would be rather adorable to have a lady on the Gale have a daughter by some strange turn of events though...

Or just slip in surreptitiously, like I did. XD Nobody has hit me over the head with a frying pan yet, and hopefully they won't - I wasn't really sure what I was doing, either. It was pretty wild, watching them go.

Most of the ship probably heard them shuffling about so it is no wonder that it caught Skye's attention.

I wanted to make sure it WASN'T poison. I was more wondering if it had been tampered.
I read a bit about how Inuits use the same method your describing to make fresh water with body heat out in the arctic. Which is the same method Riah uses when he cooks. I thought it was kinda neat, but yeah, the dehydration would be suck.
On the other-hand, Elliot is too amused by Cameron.

Yea I suppose..I'll do it later though. Maybe.
I still thought the daughter idea would be most awesome cause it's like...bleeding men and exposed breasts and cursing sailors. It's the perfect environment for a child
