Yawn, it helps. Or grab your nose with your fingers, and try to blow air through it. Not too hard, but you should hear a little 'pop' and your ears will be open again. Swallowing hard also helps. It's just a difference in air preassure inside you. Scuba diving teaches you these things.

I used to, then I moved out of home... now I just have everything down nice and low so it doesn't bother me too much...

When I was younger, I had a lot of issues with my ears - at some point my doctor thought I would stay deaf - but I eventually grew out of it. I learned a lot of tricks during that time, though, and I also learned to hate ear-cleaning devices. They're satanic.
