There's LOTS of episodes with Daleks, but Captain Jack Harkness(the American) joined in The Empty Child. I'll have to re watch season 1 and see(Granted in that episode there were no Daleks, and I don't think there were any keyboards). tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Dalek_(TV_story) <--- THIS one. It was a different American from Captain Jack and he only stuck around for a few episodes. And it was Utah, not Iowa, that the episode's set in.

I thought a random portalette was appearing in a random street. I had some questions until it finally became a phone-booth?! WTF?! I wish I'd been watching this series before.....

Well, the tardis isn't alway a phone-booth. that's would stand out too much in Rome, the Tardis looks like whatever on the outside. But a blue phone-booth to the Doctor and his sidekick... some else could explain this better. QW you want to try?

Sure, Nanashi!
The TARDIS has a chameleon circuit that lets it blend into whatever era it lands in. So for modern times, it could look like a car, but for ancient eras, it could be a tree or a boulder. The Doctor's TARDIS, however, has a broken circuit, so it's stuck looking like a police box. It's not noticed, however, because it has a perception filter. As explained in the show, it makes something virtually unnoticable, something seen "only out of the corner of the eye" and dismissed. So even if someone does see the box, it wouldn't stand out to them.
Does that make sense?

it's like that one not-my-problem field from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy right?

OOOOhhh, that one. Yeah, with the collector guy. I remember him now.
Also, the doctor explains at one point in time that people just don't notice things anymore, so even if it didn't have a perception filter, people are just too preoccupied to notice these days.
Kanna, I haven't read the Guide in so long, I don't remember that from it... sorry.

Kanna, I remember that! The Somebody-Else's-Problem field. Which I thought was hilarious. And probably stupidly effective.

I loved the books but I got a little irritated with them when Random came into the picture... .
