Hey! I'm also from Saskatchewan!
I'm from Saskatoon, actually.
I can help with things, if you'd like.
The capital of Saskatchewan is Regina, which has around more than 190,000 people living there.
Saskatoon is the largest city with a little more than 230,000 people. Saskatoon houses the provincial university. The University of Saskatchewan.
Other places are Prince Albert (P.A.), North Battleford, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, and Swift Current. There are also other places.
As Panda Night Terrors pointed out, up north there is a lot of that lake area activities. Lots of water and trees up there.
Scientifically, we boast biotechnological engineering of plants (like wheat and grain), mostly to make them more durable.
We also have a synchrotron...mind you, i have no clue what it is, but we have one!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchrotronhaha read up, I can't make heads or tails of it.
(something about particle accelerations, and xrays, and things...)
The South Saskatchewan River runs right through Sasaktoon. Saskatoon has many bridges. It is called the "Bridge City" because we have 7.
Local notes: The "west-side" is considered the rough area, and the "east-side" is considered the good area. I've met plenty of "east-siders" who claim to be too scared to go to the west-side. Whatever (I live on the west-side...it's not too bad, unless you go to the busier places, like around 20th-23rd St. and the alphabet avenues. Usually Pleasant Hill, and Riversdale gets the people going "Eeek" or something)
There's a bit of racism in Saskatoon, but it depends on the generation, and area you're in. Mostly towards the Native people (Native American). It's a bit sad, but it exists.
There is also rivalry between Saskatoon and Regina. Saskatoon says Regina sucks (for whatever reason...usually we make fun of their water, saying it's disgusting, that is comes from a bog/slough, and stinks, "It's so thick, you can walk on it" yeah...XD). Regina has their own things about Saskatoon.
A lot of us like Saskatoon Berries.
There's a lot of Ukrainians here.
The store "Canadian Tire" is also sometimes called "Ukrainian Tire".
Some people call hoodies "bunny hugs" (aww, aren't we so cute?)
Gangs are slowly on the rise...identification by colour of clothes, usually.
Highschool rivalries are common, since we got a lot of schools. Most highschools have a reputation.
We get VERY COLD in the winter, and QUITE HOT in the summer. In between we're pretty average.
We like concerts, and pretty much anything. There are lots of festivals during the summer. Every weekend has SOMETHING. It slows down during the fall, and winter is just a mess, lol. XD Spring is wonderful.
We like our Saskatoon Berries. Saskatoon Berry pie is quite yummy. <<;
Saskatoon has a love for the band the Arrogant Worms, especially their song "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" Their shows are always a huge success here XD
"Well I used to be a farmer and I made a living fine
I had a little stretch of land along the C.P. Line
But times went by, and though I tried, the money wasn't there
And the bankers came and took my land, and told me "fair is fair".
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no
"Hire you now," they'd always laugh, "we just let twenty go!"
The government they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum
Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone,
I'm gonna be a PIRATE! on the river Saskatchewan.
(ar.. ar.. ar.....!)
'An it's a heave-ho, high-ho, coming down the Plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, high-hey, farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores.
Arr!
Well you'd think the local farmers would know that I'm at large
But just the other day I saw an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser
I rammed their ship and sank it, and I stole their fertilizer.
A bridge outside of Moose Jaw spans a mighty river
Farmers cross in so much fear their stomachs are a-quiver
'Cause they know that Captain Tractor* is hiding in the bay,
I'll jump the bridge and knock them cold and sail off with their hay.
'Cause it's a heave-ho, high-ho, coming down the Plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, high-hey, farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores
Arr!
Well, Mountie Bob he chased me, he was always at my throat
He followed on the shoreline, 'cause he didn't own a boat,
But the cutbacks were a-coming and the Mountie lost his job
So now he's sailing with me and we call him Salty Bob.
A swinging sword, a skull-and-bones, and pleasant company,
I never pay my income tax and screw the G.S.T. (Screw it!)
Sailing down to Saskatoon, the terror of the sea
If you wanna reach the Co-op, boy, you gotta get by me!
It's a heave-ho, high-ho, coming down the Plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, high-hey, farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores
Arr!
Arrr ya salty dog.. arrr ya salty gopher.. arrr ya salty bale ofhay!
Well pirate life's appealing but you don't just find it here
I heard that in North Alberta there's a band of buccaneers
They roam the Athabasca from Smith to Fort McKay
And you're bound to lose your Stetson if you have to pass their way
Well, winter is a-coming and a chill is in the breeze
My pirate days are over once the river starts to freeze
But I'll be back in springtime, but now I've got to go
I hear there's lots of plundering down in New Mexico.
'An it's a heave-ho, high-ho, coming down the Plains
Stealing wheat and barley and all the other grains
And it's a ho-hey, high-hey, farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores "
* in the original lyrics, Captain Tractor was called "Tractor Jack", but a band called "Captain Tractor" did a cover of it, and suddenly everyone thought it was their own creation...so, the Worms started using "Captain Tractor" in their song. Fun fun.
It's a great song, to be sure.
There is lots of mining around Saskatchewan, mostly for potash and uranium, as we have a massive amount of uranium up north (Note: Uranium City).
About Saskatoon again: An area considered 'Alternative', with a lot of artistic folk, and interesting people would be around Broadway Ave. I've seen lots of interesting people there.
Uhm, downtown Saskatoon is home to all kinds of people (like any kind of downtown). Some clubs at night, a few accessed via allyway. There is the "underground" which is a goth nightclub. very popular here (never been there, but my friends go). Uhm, for gay clubs, Diva's is very popular. Hm...whatelse, lol...I don't know much about the club/bar scene. There are raves, and warehouse things too...
*sigh* I dunno, I'm bored of typing this out now...just ask if you wanna know things. XD I'll look into it.
Oh. There is also the Bessborough Hotel. it's very fancy. Lots of people think it's haunted...
There is also the old graveyard out by Nutana, along the riverbank. They had to transport a lot of graves from there because it's...RIGHT BY THE RIVER...and erosion occurred...and bodies started falling out of the side...yeah...<<; Fascinating stuff, really.
Anyway, yeah..bored...
