Has there ever been a movie based on a book that everyone more or less liked in the end?

The Golden Compass, despite undergoing a few changes, was overall much the same as a movie as it was a a book. Although they swapped the last two major plot events and cut it off almost right at the end, I liked how they dealt with the daemons and everything. Nobody made a big deal about it, the daemons were just there, as if they were always supposed to be there. I rather liked that. I hope they make the last two books in the series... Otherwise, a lot of books-turned-movies have just been meh. I haven't seen any of the Narnias because I liked the books but just don't want to see how they butchered the movies, even if the actor for Prince Caspian is a little cutie. I'm looking forward to Inkheart, though. I want to see it next week

Yeah, I agree somewhat with the Golden compass, but I didn't think Nicole Kidman was right for the part. She just didn't seem wicked enough.

I play males too. I'm still technically a female.
And yeah, DB Evolution. Lol. And yeah, it's very much not the same as DBZ. But *shrug*, whatever.
And on the subject of book to movies..
Do not go into watching a movie based off of a book with the mindset of comparing every detail. You will end up hating the movie. Thor, I mean, really. If you are going to do that, just don't go see the movie. Movies will NEVER be as good as books, and they HAVE TO change or cut things. You can't have everything that a book has in a movie, and some things need to be changed. So please, and I'm not saying any of you folk are like this, don't be a fucking douche bag when it comes to movies based off of books.
And another thing, don't be dissin' B Frae! He's my homie! *word*

I liked the Narnia movies, they kept pretty true to the book but stayed flexible enough to work on screen ^^ And Caspian may be a cutie, but I want Susan Peter!

I don't agree with the whole book to movie = major fail. *puts up shields* I hate LOTR, but I MUCH preferred the movies to the books. The Narnia movies were awesome, as were the first few Harry Potters, Howl's Moving Castle, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Series of Unfortunate Events, and way more that I'm forgetting. In the case of all of those above, with the exception of LOTR, I quite liked the movie as much as the book. It's just as Trey said; you can't go in expecting to compare the movie to the book. They're just not going to measure up. You have to compare them as two different entities. When I heard that they were making a "Dark is Rising" movie, I was supremely excited because that's one of my all-time favourite book series, but when I saw it, it was terrible -- not because it didn't follow the book, but because the acting was bad, the effects were terrible, etc.

I agree that book to movie doesn't equal fail, but I gotta say this; I loved LOTR ^^ And hated the Harry Potter movies. But hey, everyone's different! ^^

You know, there is one remake that I enjoyed MORE then the original. If you can find the anime Gankutsuo? It is superior to the sourcework, The Count of Monte Cristo.
I know. I said it. Huzzah

Oh gods how i love Gankutsuo!!!! Also second the motion that you can't compare a book version vs. a movie version. Though they're both made for entertainment, that's were the similarities pretty much end. They should each be taken on their own and enjoyed for it as a singular work of art. Though on the subject of movies that have been mentioned. Benjemin Button? LOVED IT!!!!! (didn't even know it was a book until about a week after seeing it) LOTR (can't get past the first chapter due to the bloody long discriptions of whose related to who) but really enjoyed the movies. Strider = yummy, him as king? noooo! gives me back my rugged ranger! Oh and on the Harry Potter theme.... Potter Puppet Pals anyone? www.potterpuppetpals.com 'tis glorious

Trey: I agree, because text and film are two very different media, and things that work well in a book don't always work well in a film, and, to be honest, trying to directly translate everything can make the film seem dull and bland. I tend to see the film as a companion to the book, as they generally don't explain things as well as they ought to, so I see them as being a portrayal of the spirit of the book but not a direct translation. It's a bit like a language translation, I suppose. You've got to find a balance between conveying the overall meaning and entirety of the original whilst at the same time ensuring that it still makes sense in its new form. acilf: PPP are ace!

Speaking of LOTR remakes, has anyone seen Fellowship! The musical? It's an hour and forty five minute long play based off of the Fellowship of the Ring movie.

acilf: he's the guy who makes PPP Trey: no, but I've heard it's good. I'm a bit iffy about the concept, tbh. LOTR seems too solemn to be musical material.
