thank you, really THANK YOU for mentioning the pale man.
Because I didn't even think of that fucker since I got back from canada until JUST NOW.
And now I have to get from one room to the other AT NIGHT, by a DARK HALLWAY.
And he's going to eat me.

My brother rented the movie yesterday. I watched it three times today. I'm in the basement, my room is on the second floor.
I wish I could teleport. ;_;

@ Clover: I didn't think Apokalypto seemed to have much to do with that explanation either, Clover, although I suppose you could twist it around a bit to make it fit... I still think they could have done a better job about the storyline... I think they concentrated too much on the gore... I also have a thing with people portraying ancient civilizations as less civilized say as Rome was, though, which could make me biased... I still liked those headless corpses in the ditch, though...

In this context, its talking about the end of the Mayan era. ^_^ so that's who it was.... My mother and i spent the first five minutes trying to remember/figure out if it was the mayans, incans, or aztecs, because for some reason miether of us actually thought to look at the dvd case. Oh, and my sister was afraid of the Faun. Doug Jones is truly amazing.

You know the bad guys were more like Atecs, I think... was it the little tribe dudes who were the Mayans... because the mayan civilization was already mostly gone by the time the whites got there... and they had abandoned all their piramids...

Mm. It was actually the Maya... in so far as I recall, the Maya civilization fought against itself, and was thus weakened considerably. The Maya civilization was both victim and agressor. Jaguar Paw is Maya---as were his captors. The civilization was destroying itself from within, which made it easy for the conquistadors to go "AHA, lewzers".
Also... Trey and Poppy, look at it this way. The Pale Man can't GET you guys. You guys haven't eaten his food--- and neither of you are children. He only ate children. You're both adults now. So you're safe.
Just remember---don't eat ANYTHING in the Pale Man's Hall, and you'll be alright. ^_^

See, the problem with the Pale Man's Hall is that the rule exists in the first place. Because, as the laws of filmdom will have it, as soon as there's a rule, -somebody's- gonna break it. Apparently, caution and obedience are far too much to ask for. XD

It's not eating the food that wakes him up, it's the whole principle behind it! I think I mentioned it before, but the Pale Man is a blatant metaphor for Ofelia's stepfather. A monster that completely ignores her and acts as if she doesn't exist until she does something that doesn't suit his fancy.
And when you think of what happens later on in the movie, that she "stole the food" from that monster's table, which is the same as the general, even becomes a bit of a prophecy. =o
So, the second you do something naughty, that you shouldn't have done and that a person of authority would disapprove of, he's gonna JUMP OUT OF THE WALL AND FUCK YOU UP.

I mean, come on, he's got EYES on his HANDS.
And he's naked.
edit: Great, I had to look up a picture of him, didn't I? Well I didn't really want to sleep tonight anywas.

if you look on the special features disk, it actually shows how the pale man's hall and the dining hall of the real world are pretty much duplications of each other, excluding the color schemes and such.

Yeah... I still think the Pale Man is awesome. Wierdly enough, I get more scared by the human characters-- the Pale Man and the Faun are all ...Ofelia's. Captain Vidal, on the other hand, is exceedingly real.
I'd rather face the Pale Man then Captain Vidal, personally. At least the Pale Man just eats you and gets it done with. Vidal toys with you.
Also, it occurred to me that the Pale Man is a creature of the Underworld, right? And Ofelia is technically also the Princess Moanna... so isn't it possible she's his de facto ruler?
