Yeah, shut up, I made the thread. You all know you wanted to.
But just cause I made the thread doesn't mean y'all get to buy the book and then be asswipes and be like, "O-HO HOHO I KNOW WHO DIES LAWL". Because I will kill you.
I seriously will. I know how to render people to soap, okay? SO just don't do it.
But yes. This is me, bragging a bit. I have never seen 400 people show up to a frickin' BOOKSTORE before. It was a little obscene, really. Though it turns out I kick -ass- at quidditch. Like, madcore.
also, Coverart for the 7th book? I feel like there should be a Bowie somewhere on there. Its giving me '80's vibe like, whoah. Blegh. Well, thats all. Who here plans on buying the book?

I'm sorry, I just don't think Harry Potter is that great of a series... and it's not really that well written... so I'm not that phased by it, honestly...

See, thats the thing. I don't read it for the -writing-. It's, as you said, not all that well, and JK does leave a lot of plot points kind of.. nebulous.
I read it for the idea. I'm a fan of crafting universes and worlds and stories and characters... thats my big thing, and that, she's VERY good at. Harry Potter, for me, is good because the characters are vivid, and the world is... intricate, I suppose. It seems to -work-, somehow.

i'm waiting three days and then going to one of those "buy in bulk" stores. They'll have lots.
because if you didn't pre-order a book, there's no way you could get one from an actual bookstore in my town.

Yeah, I agree that the book isn't that well written, but I still read it, because it does suck me into the story, and then I don't really notice the way she wrote.
Then again, it's also KINDOF a children's book? Not children's, persay, but not just for adults. So she couldn't write it with big ostentatious words.
Also, I went on 4chan the other day and now -HO HOHO I KNOW WHO DIES LAWL

One of the best thing about the series is how much her style improves book by book. I'm tired so pardon me if I phrase things funny. Anyway, read the first and though I have yet to read/order/bother with the latest, I am sure there are dramatic differences in her style. And Trey is right, it is in all technicality a childrens series. I do love the storyline myself- thought not enough to go out at 11:30 or whatever it was and buy a danged book. Nor do I love it enough to attend a "Harry Potter party".

See, the trouble is I dissagree with you totally there as well... I'm a fan of universe creation and stories and characters as well, which is why I like the fantasy and sci-fi genre so much, but I just don't really think that JK is very good at it at all... I don't mind people liking it, or saying that you shouldn't or something... I read JK before she became famous and I thought the book was alright, nothing startling, probably wouldn't catch on... it did though and I didn't mind it, thought it was just a kids thing... but when I get grown men and women coming up to me and saying it was the best book they'd ever read... I start to lose my faith in the human race...

See, I like the concept of having a world blend with our own, and she does that. Hogwarts being a ruin to muggles and a school for magic to Wizards and witches is the sort of thing--- the personalities that just seem to pop out and be larger then life. I just find that really interesting, and for me as a writer and as an rper, she's left enough leeway that it allows for improvisation and a little bit of.. well, I guess making the world your own.
Its not the best book I've ever read, but you have to see--- I'm almost 20, right? So, most people would say I'm fully-grown, certainly I'm a legal adult in my country, and almost a legal adult in the US. So, me reading Harry Potter, a kid's series, at first seems like slumming-- reading below your level. But I started the series when I was ten, so for me its an emotional attachment. Yeah, there's people that go too far, but the majority are just having a bit of fun. Frankly, in modern day society when kids are watching over eight hours of television a day, obesity rates are sky-high and creativity and literacy are abyssmal, anything that can get kids to read and to actually think is perfectly fine with me.
I mean, my little brother loves video games, would watch tv all day if he could. But now he's reading the seventh book, and making up worlds and characters, and playing them with his friends. That's my favourite part about the series--connecting with other readers, and enjoying a good story.
Also, read the book, and the pairing I saw coming AAAAGES ago, and everyone told my I was crazy for shipping? Totally happened. Boo-frickin'-yeah.

You can totally put a basketball in Harry's hand and guitar in Voldie's.... It was funny cause the poster with the book is the same as the coverart and I totally did that to it.

My own non-spoilery, highly edited thoughts on the book?
A part of myself died a bit with a certain death, and a certain pairing made me squeal like a little girl, while another had me facepalm.
Also, my hopes for a certain character to continue developing were smashed. Yeah, the crashing you heard earlier? That was my heart. I'm going to go sweep up the pieces now and find some super glue.

<3 It's not the most well-written book in the world, but it's the ending of a series we grew up with - therefore, worth it. I took all (ALL) of my cousins who are old enough to be literate (which is like, 5? 6? I dunno) down to McNally and Robinsons' for the kickoff party, and left within ten minutes. It was about 2,000 people crammed into a city block. It was DISGUSTINGLY crowded.
(Also, I got the adult art from the North American release and I think it looks like a cheap costume pendant.)

A part of myself died a bit with a certain death, and a certain pairing made me squeal like a little girl, while another had me facepalm. Yeah. There were some parts that had me dying inside. Seriously. The thing, at the beginning? With the hoot? Mrr. And its actually ridiculous. I sailed out on the strangest ship ever. Like, the one ship I was like, "there is NO way this is ever going to be canon'd... ". There was subtext, and plot, and inklings and allusions [asphodel lily and wormwood, anyone?]... but never a snowball's chance in hell now----and then all of a sudden, it's like Heaven spoke to Jo Rowling and said, "You will give Clover a jolly", and lo!, it happened.
Because my crack-pairing got CANON'D. Like, mad-core. Unrequited, but whatever. Canon'd. Also, learning more about a certain someone's backstory? That entire scene sequence made me squee a little.
Also, my hopes for a certain character to continue developing were smashed. Yeah, the crashing you heard earlier? That was my heart. I'm going to go sweep up the pieces now and find some super glue. Awe... that's sad. Y_Y
~Bittersweet. Liked parts, disliked others.~ See, the parts that were good were very, very good. The parts that were bad were AWFUL.
I am, however, now a staunch AS/S shipper. >XD Frickin' ending. Fuckin' oy vey.
Hey Ran, PM me? I'm curious as to the points in the post sans spoiler. XD
Also, speaking of Potterdammerung, I was on the bus home today. There were fifteen people on the bus. EIGHT of us had the frickin' book. It was a little sketchy. XD

i still haven't got it yet. my mom says i have to clean my room first, but i'll work my way around that little detail and buy it.
and my uncle told me he skipped to the back of the book when he got it. I grabbed the phone from my aunt and was (loudly) listing off the reasons why "you just -can't- do that." he was laughing at the end cause i couldn't breathe properly....

I almost grabbed my friends book and read the last chapter. But I kind of owe the series more than that- I did grow up with it and would like to see it through properly. There were no less than 30 copies on site at faire this weekend I heard. Forty copies on staff alone, this does not include vendors/patrons/entertainers/security. Just the volunteer staff which does faire grunt work. Which is effing ridiculous considering our entire staff is like 50 (POSSIBLY 55) friggen people. There was one sitting on the counter at the damned burger booth. My friend was reading it in between orders. A few folks threatened to shout spoilers and were nearly lynched. The whole thing is ridiculous and yet so, so amusing.
